What Rat Damage to Car Wiring Actually Costs in India
Most people underestimate this cost, because a chewed wire sounds like a small thing. The wire is not the expensive part. Reaching it is.
Why it is rarely a spot repair
On an older car, a damaged wire could often be spliced and taped. On a modern vehicle, wiring runs in looms — bundled harnesses routed through the bay, behind the dash and along the underbody, with dozens of circuits sharing a sheath.
When a rodent chews through a loom, it rarely damages one wire cleanly. It damages several, at a point chosen for the animal's convenience rather than the technician's. Workshops frequently replace a harness section rather than repair it, because a splice inside a loom is a future fault waiting to happen.
The labour to access that section — removing intake components, sometimes dropping the underbody shielding, occasionally pulling the dash — is where most of the bill comes from.
What drives the number
Where the damage is. Engine-bay looms near the top are the cheap case. Anything behind the firewall, under the dash, or along the underbody costs multiples of that in labour.
What the wire controls. A chewed sensor line is one fault. A chewed line into an ECU or a body control module can mean a control unit that also needs replacing, and on many cars that unit requires coding to the vehicle.
How long it went unnoticed. This is the one owners can influence and usually do not. Rodent damage is often found weeks after it began, because the first symptoms are intermittent — a light that comes and goes, an AC blower that smells, a sensor that faults on some starts and not others.
Whether it is still under manufacturer warranty. It does not matter. Rodent damage is externally caused and is not a manufacturing defect, so it is not a warranty item on any mainstream Indian vehicle.
The range you should expect
A minor engine-bay repair caught early is a few thousand rupees. A harness section replacement on a mid-segment car runs into the tens of thousands. Where a control module is involved, or where the damage is behind the dash, bills well past a lakh are not unusual on premium vehicles.
Treat any specific figure — including these — as indicative. The only honest quote comes after a workshop has traced the affected circuits.
The part that is genuinely avoidable
Nearly all of this cost is access labour, not parts. That is what makes prevention economics unusual here: you are not insuring against the price of a wire, you are insuring against the hours it takes to reach one.
A one-time armouring of the harness costs a fraction of a single harness repair, and unlike the repair, it does not recur.
