Will Rodent-Proofing Void Your Car's Warranty?

Anyone who has been told that an aftermarket accessory voided their claim is right to ask this before letting a technician near the engine bay. The answer turns on a single distinction.

What actually voids warranty cover

Manufacturer warranties cover defects in materials and workmanship. They are generally not voided wholesale by aftermarket work — what happens instead is narrower and more common: the manufacturer declines a specific claim where the aftermarket work caused or contributed to the failure.

The things that genuinely create that exposure are modifications to the vehicle:

• Cutting or splicing factory wiring. Any accessory tapped into the harness, most commonly aftermarket alarms, audio and lighting.
• Drilling. Holes in body panels, the firewall or structural members.
• Removing or altering factory components. Anything that changes how a system was designed to work.
• Modifying the ECU. Remaps and piggyback units.

The common thread: the vehicle is no longer in the configuration it was engineered and tested in.

Why sleeving is a different category

Armouring works by wrapping over what is already there. The factory harness stays intact, routed exactly as it left the plant, with every connector untouched. Nothing is cut, spliced, drilled or removed, and no electrical connection is made to the vehicle at any point.

In warranty terms, that puts it closer to a seat cover than to an aftermarket alarm. There is no modified component for a manufacturer to point at, because no component was modified.

The questions worth asking any installer

Whoever you use, ask these before work starts:

1. Is anything cut, spliced or drilled? Any answer other than a flat no deserves a follow-up.
2. Is anything wired into the vehicle's electrical system? A device drawing current is a modification; a passive sleeve is not.
3. Is any factory component removed and not refitted?
4. Is the material rated for engine-bay temperatures? A sleeve that degrades or melts becomes a problem of its own.
5. What is your own warranty on the installation?

An installer who cannot answer these clearly is telling you something.

Rodent damage itself is not a warranty item

Worth stating, because it is where the real exposure lies. Rodent damage is externally caused, not a manufacturing defect, so it is not covered by any mainstream manufacturer warranty in India. And as covered in our article on insurance, comprehensive motor policies commonly exclude it too.

So the warranty question, asked properly, is not "will protecting my car cost me my warranty." It is: this damage is covered by neither my manufacturer warranty nor my insurance, so what stops me paying for it myself?
